Engineering Considerations

Start with the Tooling Function, Not a Generic Part List

Fixture components only work correctly when locating, clamping, checking and mounting relationships are understood together.

Locating

Reference faces and locating holes establish where the part sits.

Clamping

Clamp interfaces secure the part while preserving machining and inspection access.

Guiding / Checking

Guide and checking features relate directly to the datum system.

Mounting / Structure

Mounting interfaces and supports maintain alignment between components.

Critical Interfaces

Critical Features That Control Fixture Performance

  1. Datum Surfaces

Precision-machined reference surfaces establish consistent location.

  2. Locating Holes

Accurate hole positions support repeatable positioning of pins and locators.

  3. Dowel Pin Locations

Critical for repeatable relationships between fixture components.

  4. Clamp Mounting Points

Machined interfaces for standard or custom clamping hardware.

  5. Tool Clearance

Clearance must avoid interference between the fixture, cutting tools and inspection equipment.

  6. Replaceable Wear Components

Bushings, liners and replaceable elements can simplify fixture maintenance when specified.

Common Questions

Fixtures & Jigs FAQs

Practical answers before you send your fixture, jig or machine structure drawing.

Can you supply machined components for fixture assemblies?

Yes. We manufacture custom machined components used in fixture assemblies from customer drawings. Share the assembly model, bill of materials and the required locating, clamping and alignment relationships. We will confirm the machining scope and, where applicable, fitting, standard hardware and inspection requirements during quotation.

Can you manufacture fixture components from STEP files and 2D drawings?

Yes. A STEP model helps us review geometry, machining access and relationships between components. A matching 2D drawing should identify datums, critical tolerances, fits, threads and surface requirements. Please use the same revision for both files. If a detail is missing or conflicts with the model, we will clarify the requirement before confirming the manufacturing scope.

Can locating holes and mounting features be inspected?

Yes. Locating holes, dowel features, mounting patterns and datum surfaces can be checked against the approved drawing. The inspection method depends on the geometry, tolerance and access to each feature. CMM, height gauge, micrometer and caliper inspection methods may be used as appropriate. Please identify the critical relationships and any reporting requirements so we can confirm the inspection scope before production.

Can standard clamps, bushings and hardware be included?

They can be included when specified and available. Please provide the manufacturer references, part numbers, quantities and installation requirements for standard clamps, bushings and other hardware. We can review these alongside the custom machined parts and confirm the supply and fitting scope in the quotation. Availability, compatibility and any customer-supplied items will be confirmed before production.

Can you machine one-off prototype fixtures?

Yes. We can review one-off fixture components and prototype tooling from your drawings. Provide the intended use, material, component quantity and the features needed to evaluate fit and function. We will review machining access, setup requirements and inspection needs before preparing a quotation. If the prototype may lead to repeat orders, include that plan so revision and component requirements are clear.

Can you manufacture replacement fixture components?

Yes, replacement locator blocks, supports, plates and other machined components can be reviewed against an available drawing or model. Include the current revision, material, mating geometry and the interfaces that must fit the existing fixture. If only a worn sample is available, contact us first to establish what additional dimensional and functional information is needed before machining can be confirmed.

What information should I send for a quotation?

Send the available 3D model and 2D drawings, material requirements, quantity, critical tolerances and inspection needs. For a fixture or machine structure, include the assembly relationship, mating part model and standard hardware references where available. Identify datum surfaces, locating features, finish requirements and your project schedule. Related drawings can be combined into one ZIP within the upload limit shown on our quotation form.
